Power celebrity music couple Jay Z and Beyoncé have announced they are going vegan for 22 days. The pair have dabbled with vegan diets before when Beyoncé was pregnant. This time, their plant-based challenge has been spurred by Marco Borges, a physiologist and friend of Jay Z. Marco heavily promotes plant-based diets on his on website.
So, what does the vegan world make of this? Well, in our opinion, any celebrity or well known person who promotes plant-based diets is a step in the right direction. The fact that a couple as popular at these two are shouting about it is fantastic. Here’s hoping plant-based diets can be made more mainsteam by these famous trend setters.
However, we think some vegans may feel this is not worth the fuss as they are not becoming true vegans. This is a fair point, and of course ideally we too want them to be vegan indefinitely. We want them to go vegan not just for health, but for the animals. It seems the couple are just changing their diets too, rather than all the elements of their lifestyles (e.g., cruelty-free clothing etc) As we always say though, Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither was vegetarianism. Look how popular and widely accepted that is now…
So, ‘Jay Z and Beyoncé Go Vegan for 22 days’ has began, the challenge launched yesterday, December 3. which Jay Z wrote more about on his Life and Times blog :
”On December 3rd, one day before my 44th birthday I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based!! This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a “plant-based breakfast” everyday. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought…
Why now? There’s something spiritual to me about it being my 44th birthday and the serendipity behind the number of days in this challenge; 22 (2+2=4) coupled with the fact that the challenge ends on Christmas day…It just feels right! So you can call it a spiritual and physical cleanse.
I will post my progress… Any professional vegans out there that have any great food spots please help out! I don’t know what happens after Christmas. A semi-vegan, a full plant-based diet? Or just a spiritual and physical challenge? We’ll see…
Best of luck and health! P.S.
B is also joining me.”
We’re really excited about this news, and we wish them both luck – here’s hoping they enjoy this healthy life change so much they continue far and beyond the 22 day pledge.
