Serena Williams is currently ranked number one in women’s singles tennis — in short, she’s a tennis superstar. Her and sister Venus dominate the sport, and they both just happen to be vegan! Serena decided to go vegan to support her sister, after Venus began a vegan diet to help ease the effects of an autoimmune condition diagnosed in 2011.
Together, the sisters have won 13 Grand Slam doubles titles, and individually have won 24 Grand Slam singles.
The prodigal sisters, who also live together, follow a raw food vegan diet (although they both admit they’re occasionally ‘cheagens‘) consisting of lots of juices and wheatgrass. The Atlanta Blackstar reveals some of Serena’s vegan recipes, noting that raw tacos are a favourite:
“I make anything and everything. … I’m most proud of my raw tacos. I do it with nuts. I dehydrate the nuts and create the raw tacos, it’s delicious.”
The website also quotes Serena talking about attitudes to food in general: “People as a whole just know more about health and are conscious about what to eat, I am definitely eating more greens and drinking more greens.”
We’re looking forward to hearing more details of their diet soon.
Serena finishes the year with prize money of nearly $12m shattering the all-time women’s record set last year by Victoria Azarenka, who won $7.9m. It’s also the third-highest single season prize money total in tennis history, men’s and women’s — only Novak Djokovic’s 2011 and 2012 totals are higher.
Whether you’re a tennis fan or vegan — or both — Serena Williams’ success is overwhelmingly impressive, and she is a great advocate for veganism, and feminism for that matter!
